Fifth Grade Knitting
The Handwork curriculum for class 5 is ultimately “knitting in the round”.
We make our own double pointed knitting needles using wooden dowels, and use them to knit a hat, sock or headband!
Before we begin the hat, we spend some time practicing all of the stitches needed to make the hat. To keep a hat from rolling up at the brim, we use a rib stitch (knit two, purl two). This stitch requires concentration and perfection. While we learn rib stitch we also practice stockinette stitch (knit a row, purl a row). We practice these stitches by making a small bookmark on two needles.
Here is an example – it is easy to see the different stitches used in this little sampler. Now we are ready to being our hats!
