Essential Oils in Early Childhood

The Preschool and Kindergarten at The City School can sometimes feel like a different world. When you enter the doors you are taken into a very cozy safe space devoid of anything harsh. The toys are natural and handmade, and organized with great care. The art on the wall is gentle and evokes memories of beautiful stories. Everything is put in it’s place, and this helps the children (and parents) truly relax and thrive.

Another thing you may notice when you enter the classroom is the scent in the air. There is usually a diffuser running quietly on a shelf. Both the Kindy and PreK use essential oils for different effects all throughout the year and the day.

During Flu season there is a special immunity blend, during nap they often diffuse cedarwood, on a spring day they may diffuse grapefruit and tangerine to inspire feelings of well being.
Essential oils are 100% natural and therefore do not irritate people sensitive to artificial fragrance.

Below are some tried and true blends that you can use in your own home. As always, when purchasing essential oils, try to get the best that you can afford. It does make a difference. If you have a budget, it’s often better to get less quantity superior oils then more quantity inferior oils.

How to choose the right brand of Essential oil?  There are a lot out there.  The best advice we can give as we are not professionals in this topic is to research the company, see where they get their oils, and how they produce them.  Read their reviews, and start off with a small order.  Trust your nose!
